Bicycle Education and
Registration program
A few months ago, Deputy Ken Yanecko transferred to Avalon Station. He is well known throughout the County for being the Sheriff’s Department’s lead patrol bicycle training instructor. Several years ago, Deputy Yanecko created the BEAR program.
The program went countywide, then statewide and finally became a national program. The program recycles confiscated bicycles and offers them to children who participate and graduate from the program.
The children who participate in the program learn about bicycle repair and restoration, as well as advanced bicycle safety skills, all the while reinforcing the importance of respect, good citizenship and other positive attributes.
Avalon Station’s first class graduated on July 5. The students who completed the class got the opportunity to ride their new bicycles, which they helped construct, in the Fourth of July Parade alongside of Deputy Yanecko.
We were all happy to see this extraordinary program come to Avalon and be able to offer it to the boys and girls in the community. Our second class will begin later in the month. Parents who would like to sign their children up for the program are encouraged to contact Deputy Ken Yanecko at Avalon Station.
June 29
• An Avalon resident reported the theft of a gas can from the bed of her truck while it was parked on Country Club Drive.
June 30
• An Avalon resident was involved in a motorcycle accident on Dump Road. Due to his injuries, he was airlifted to a hospital on the mainland. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
July 1-July 2
• No significant incidents.
July 3
• At 1:40 a.m., Ingrid Lehmann, 43, a resident of Marina Del Rey, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public.
• At 9:25 p.m., Raymond Garcia, 61, an Avalon resident, was arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol after he was involved a single vehicle accident near the East Summit.
July 4
• An island visitor reported a friend pushed her, called her names and kicked her. The visitor was not injured and did not want her friend arrested.
• An island visitor accidentally drove her golf cart off the road near Mt. Ada. The driver was treated for her injuries. The cause of the accident appears to have been operator error.
• An island visitor reported her unattended purse was stolen from a business in the 100 block of Sumner Avenue at 11:30 p.m.
July 5
• An island visitor reported his camera bag was stolen from him while he was walking in the 100 block of Marilla Avenue at 1:10 a.m.
