Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of March 17, 2021 to March 23, 2021. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
March 17
• Deputies responded to reports of loud music near Whittley Avenue and Terrace Avenue. The disturbing party was contacted and a city administrative citation was issued.
March 18
• Deputies responded to Beacon Avenue and Catalina Avenue regarding a call for service and made contact with a male adult. The male displayed the objective symptoms of being under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and unable to care for himself. David Marteellock, 24, of Cazenovia, NY, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public.
• Deputies responded to “Middle Beach” regarding a male with a German Shepard at the water line. The male and dog had left the area prior to the deputy’s arrival on the scene.
March 19
• Deputies along with the Fire Departments responded to a roll over golf cart collision at the pet cemetery on Wrigley Road. Three of the passengers were treated on scene for leg injuries and transported to CIMC for further evaluation and treatment.
• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Sumner Avenue regarding two males arguing. An investigation revealed that no crime had occurred and the parties were counseled.
March 20
• Deputies along with the Fire Departments responded to a single golf cart collision on Marilla Avenue at Whittley Avenue when the driver lost control due to unsafe speed. A female passenger was treated on the scene for a laceration to her left knee and transported to CIMC for further evaluation and treatment.
• An informant came to the station lobby and reported that he was threatened by a male adult who was brandishing a knife in a threatening manner in area of 35 Pebbly Beach Road. Detectives are investigating the incident at this time.
• Deputies on patrol contacted an individual who riding his electric bicycle at a high rate of speed and had ran two stop signs in the area of Sumner Avenue and Treemont Street Avenue. Jesus Meison-Tejada, 22, Avalon,was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance. The male was found to be in possession suspected methamphetamine as well as possession of a drug paraphernalia pipe.
March 21
• Deputies responded to a report of loud music in the 300 block of Whittley Avenue. The disturbing party and host was contacted, warned and turned the music off.
• Deputies responded to a report a domestic violence call in the 100 block of Whittley Avenue where yelling was heard in a room at the location. Deputies contacted the parties and determined that it was only a verbal argument between the two parties and they were counseled.
• Deputies responded to Descanso Beach Club regarding three women arguing with employees and refusing to leave. Deputies made contact with the women and were escorted off of the property.
• Deputies responded to Clarissa Avenue and Pebbly Beach Road regarding a report of a possible drunk driver in a green golf cart. Deputies made contact with the driver who was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
• Deputies were conducting a patrol check at the Descanso Beach Club area and came upon a male who was lying motionless on the ground. The deputies attempted to wake the male to determine his wellbeing but did not get a response. The deputies requested the fire department to render first aid. While the male was being treated an on looker said that the male had consumed several alcoholic drinks throughout the day. The male was transported to CIMC for treatment of possible alcohol poisoning.
March 22
• Deputies responded to the 600 block of Crescent Avenue regarding an argument involving a couple. Deputies determined it was a verbal argument over misplaced keys.
March 23
• Deputies contacted an informant at the station regarding his niece and nephew who are juveniles that were not home when he returned from work. During the investigation deputies determined that the juveniles were taken to the mainland by their grandmother without permission. It was determined that the children were not in danger and the case is being investigated as a misdemeanor possible child endangerment.
Safety Note – Drinking Alcohol in Public
The state and city are making positive progress on the COVID-19 pandemic and operating under the “Red Tier” with less restrictions.
While operating in the “Red Tier,” we have seen an increase people drinking in public area on Crescent Avenue and out toward the Casino. Deputies will be increasing their concentration in these areas and issuing citations for violations of the Avalon Municipal Code and the Los Angeles County Code.
