Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of March 10, 2021 to March 16, 2021.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
March 10
• Deputies responded to the 200 block of Catalina Avenue to check on the welfare of a resident who has been drinking excessively. It was determined that the person was not intoxicated and able to care for himself.
• Deputies were summoned to assist the Adult Protective Services with a suspected elder abuse case. The investigation is ongoing.
March 11
• Deputies responded to the bathrooms across from the Tuna Club regarding juveniles throwing water bottles at passing motorists. Another informant called about juveniles throwing stuff off the fuel dock. The juveniles had left the area prior to the deputy’s arrival on the scene.
March 12
• Deputies responded to the 100 block of Crescent Avenue regarding a male adult who was bothering people at the hotel. The male displayed the objective symptoms of being under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and unable to care for himself. Byron Perry, 42, of Huntington Beach, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public.
March 13
• Deputies along with the Fire Departments responded to rescue calls at People’s Park and the Green Pleasure Pier. The calls involved two individual males experiencing medical episodes. The male were treated on scene and transported to the Catalina Island Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment.
March 14
• Deputies responded to two reports of loud music in the 200 block of Whittley Avenue. The disturbing party and host was contacted, warned and complied to shut down the party.
• Deputies responded to the 400 block of Crescent Avenue regarding a male adult and female adult fighting. Upon further investigation it was determined that the involved parties were in fact an engaged couple. The incident involved physical violence by the male. Benjamin Torres, of Oxnard, California was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.
• Deputies responded to Crescent Avenue for a rented golf cart driving on the walkway. Deputies checked the area but could not locate the vehicle.
March 15
• Deputies conducted high visibility patrol. There were no incidents to report.
March 16
• Deputies on patrol contacted a wanted individual in the 300 block of Sumner Avenue. Deputies arrested Juan Tamayo, 19, of Avalon, based on two outstanding warrants. Upon being searched incident to his arrest, he was found to be in possession suspected methamphetamine and he was additionally charged for suspicion of drug possession.
Safety Note:
Stop Signs
Vehicle Code 22450 (a) reads:
“The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within, an intersection shall stop at a limit line, if marked, otherwise before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection.”
California law says that all drivers must come to a complete stop when stopping at stop signs. A complete stop is when a vehicle is at a speed of zero. The vehicle is not moving forward.
There are two penalties for violating VC 22450: a traffic ticket costing $238 plus court fees and points on the driver’s driving record.
