On Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that his office, in conjunction with the state legislature, reached an agreement to begin re-opening in-class student instruction by April 1, even if counties remain in the purple tier. The agreement is part of a bill that will provide funding of more than $6 billion to help with providing in-person instruction, as well as learning recovery for students.
The plan calls for transitional kindergarten through grade 2 to begin no later than April 1. Long Beach Unified had already announced their plan to begin that process, with TK through grade 5 beginning in-person instruction by March 29. The phased plan would allow for all grades to be able to return to in-person instruction by April 26.
LBUSD Superintendent Jill Baker said that the plan to re-open has included vaccines for teachers and employees who want them. LBUSD partnered with Long Beach Health and Human Services to provide the vaccines, with priority going to those who interact with the public and teachers in the lower grades.
“Thousands of our employees have received this vaccine in recent weeks,” Baker said in a release.
Assuming all goes as planned, high school seniors would return to classrooms by April 19, with grades 6-8 returning on April 20 and grades 9-11 by April 26. In class instruction would not be full time to start, but would be hybrid instruction, with distance learning and in-person Students would not be required to return to in-class instruction, but could continue with distance learning if families prefer.
“In-person learning will be offered, but not required,” Baker said.
State Assembly member Patrick O’Donnell (D – Long Beach), who represents Catalina Island, issued a statement of support for the plan and the bill supporting the funding.
“Returning our students and teachers safely to the classroom is a top priority,” said Assemblymember O’Donnell, Chair of the Assembly Education Committee. “This agreement is a good start toward reopening the rest of our schools for in-person instruction. Our students cannot wait.”
Funding will not only support the safe return of students and teachers, but is also earmarked for support of students who may have fallen behind during the pandemic shutdown.
“It is of utmost importance to provide funding to address learning loss. By providing in-person learning recovery services for our students, we can help get them back on track,” O’Donnell said.
