Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of March 25 to March 31, 2020.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
March 25
• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Tremont Street regarding a family disturbance. Deputies determined the family was arguing and no crimes had been committed.
March 26
• Deputies conducted patrol checks throughout the city of Avalon ensuring residents are complying with the “Safer at Home” Order. Most residents are thinking about the communities’ safety and staying at home. Please use social distancing and stay at home.
March 27
• The County of Los Angeles Health Officer, ordered all public beaches, piers, and trails closed. Catalina Island is in compliance with this order.
• A victim came to the Avalon Sheriff’s Station and reported that his girlfriend assaulted him in the 300 block of Tremont Street. The investigation is ongoing.
March 28
• Deputies received a call regarding people gathering at the Casino Dive Park. Deputies contacted several individuals and reminded them of the “Safer at Home” Order. The individuals were cooperative and agreed to socially distance themselves.
March 29
• Deputies responded to a 2-year-old that was injured during a bicycle accident at 1 Casino Way. The father was pulling his son in a bicycle trailer when the trailer became separated from the bicycle, injuring the child. The father fled the scene leaving the baby with a passing Harbor Patrol officer. Deputies are conducting a criminal investigation.
March 30
• A victim reported he was walking on Pebbly Beach Road when he passed a male who was sitting in a golf cart. As he passed the male, the male threw two rocks at him. Both rocks missed the victim. The investigation is ongoing.
March 31
• Deputies were called to Tremont Street regarding a family assault investigation. Deputies arrested Antonio Arellano from Avalon on suspicion of assault.

There are suspects using the Coronavirus as a way to scam victims.
Do not click on “phishing” emails, (always go directly to the original website). Do not click on links or attachments you do not recognize.
Before you give to any charities, research them to make sure they are a legitimate organization.
Do not fall for counterfeit treatments and/or equipment.

Only a small number of people, mostly juveniles are not complying with the order. If you have children, please keep them at home for their own safety and the safety of others. A majority of the residents are complying and doing the right thing to keep our community safe. Please socially distance yourself from others (6 feet), stay at home as much as possible, wash your hands regularly, and clean commonly touched areas.
