Scouts from Avalon recently teamed up to fill care packages for service men and women who are serving overseas.
Local Boy Scout leader Mark Hottendorf, who is also a veteran, remembers how he loved getting care packages sent to him while stationed in Germany. He asked Pack 400 if they would like to send a package to one of our local soldiers serving overseas and they jumped at the opportunity.
They packed up a box filled with goodies and wrote some letters thanking them for their service. The response from Avalon was amazing; people wanted to donate more stuff and send out more packages to other locals who are serving away from home.
The community gave and the Boy Scouts invited the Girl Scouts to join in filling the next 10 care packages.
They wrote letters and drew pictures, and everyone worked like an assembly line to get the job done.
“We discussed why we were doing this and how they thought it would make them feel knowing that Avalon is thinking about them,” Hottendorf said.
In the packages were local items like FD t-shirts, Avalon stickers, copies of the Catalina Islander, chap sticks, beef jerky, gum, all different kinds of candy and much more important, it was filled with Love by the local youth.
“They all learned something and it filled our hearts with joy. Thank You to everyone who donated and helped out in anyway, especially to my wife Cheri who had to fill out all the paperwork for customs and bring them to the Post Office,” Hottendorf said.
On Wednesday, a woman from Fullerton posted a photo of her husband holding a Avalon Fire Department t-shirt and a card on the Catalina Discussion page on Facebook. She thanked the scouts and their leadership and noted how much her husband enjoyed receiving the package.
