Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Jan. 1 to Jan. 7, 2020. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
January 1
• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Descanso Avenue regarding a fight in progress call. When they arrived, they learned that two brothers assaulted each other. One of the brothers was transported to the hospital due to his injuries. Neither brother desired the arrest of the other.
• Deputies responded to the men’s restroom on the Green Pier regarding a small paper fire that had been extinguished. Deputies learned that someone in the restroom had lit some toilet paper on fire which charred a plastic baby changing table. Deputies are reviewing surveillance video and looking for witnesses. The investigation is ongoing.
January 2
• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Metropole Avenue regarding a person that was intoxicated, screaming for help and possibly wanting to hurt himself. Deputies contacted the man and determined he did not want to hurt himself. The man’s family arrived and took care of him. No criminal laws were violated.
• Deputies responded to a traffic collision in the 100 block of Metropole Avenue. A work truck was backing up when its trailer hitch got caught on the bumper of the second vehicle damaging that vehicle. There were no injuries.
• Deputies from Two Harbors and the Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire call in the Interior of the island. Preliminary investigation revealed the fire started in the engine compartment, possibly caused by a mechanical problem. There were no injuries and the Fire Department extinguished the fire.
January 3
• Deputies received a call of a mother and daughter that had been involved in an altercation in the 300 block of Descanso Avenue. During the incident, the 16-year-old suffered minor scratches to her body. The investigation is continuing.
January 4
• Deputies responded to the 100 block of Crescent Avenue regarding several people arguing with each other. Deputies determined no crimes had been committed and warned the party goers about not disturbing other guests.
January 5
• Deputies received a call of three people fishing at Lover’s Cove. Upon the deputies’ arrival, they saw three people getting ready to fish. Lover’s Cove is a protected area where fishing is not allowed. The individuals were informed of the law and decided to leave the area.
January 6
• Deputies responded to the 100 block of Banning Drive regarding a vandalism call. Someone threw a ceramic pot through the front window of the residence. The investigation is ongoing.
January 7
• Deputies identified the suspect that threw the ceramic pot through the residential window. The victim decided she did not want the suspect arrested.

Please remember not to have your dog on Front Street (also known as Crescent Avenue). Deputies and Code Enforcement officers will be issuing citations in the near future.
