Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Nov. 20 to Nov. 26, 2019. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
November 20
• Deputies conducted a presentation at the Avalon School for the younger students. The topics consisted of the 911 system, wearing bicycle helmets, and other safety concerns.
• Deputies responded to Beacon Street and Catalina Avenue regarding an intoxicated male laying on the sidewalk. Deputies arrested Justin Lemasters from Henderson, Nevada, on suspicion of public intoxication.
November 21
• Deputies from Avalon Station attended the monthly Avalon School meeting. The deputies discussed recent calls they have received at the school.
November 22
• A visitor to the island found a substance resembling cocaine. He turned the substance into the Sheriff’s Station. It is unknown who the substance belongs to.
November 23
• Deputies responded to a traffic collision in the 300 block of Whittley Avenue. During their investigation, deputies learned the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Deputies arrested Leah Melber from Avalon on suspicion of drunk driving.
• Avalon Deputies worked with the U.S. Coast Guard conducting boat safety inspections off of Catalina Island.
November 24
• Deputies responded to the 100 block of Sumner Avenue regarding a domestic violence incident. Deputies arrested both John Cookson and Alison McCann from La Crescenta on suspicion of assault.
November 25
• Deputies arrested Glen Hernandez from Avalon on suspicion of assault and making criminal threats to a victim. The arrest occurred in the 100 block of East Whittley Avenue.
• Deputies responded to a hit and run traffic collision at Metropole Avenue and Beacon Street. There were no injuries and minor damage. Deputies are currently looking for surveillance video that captured the incident.
November 26
• Deputies received a call of a group of visitors that were causing a loud disturbance in the 400 block of Avalon Canyon Road. Several family members were arguing with the golf cart rental personnel. No crimes were violated.
Safety Note
You are required to come to a full stop at a stop sign. Also do not speed on Pebbly Beach Road. The speed limit is 20 miles per hour.
