The fourth and fifth grade students of Avalon School were treated to an end-of-the-year fishing excursion on May 28, to celebrate their work during the school year. The trip was provided by the Tuna Club Foundation.

The Foundation provided the boat, several volunteers and plenty of gear for all the children to fish. The boat was the Toronado out of Long Beach. Fourth graders fished in the morning and fifth graders fished in the afternoon.

The boat took the students past Toyon Bay, where it anchored for fishing. Students hooked a variety of fish, including, sculpin, calico bass, blue perch and sheep’s head, among others.

“Almost all of the students caught at least one fish, many caught 3, or 4, or 5. Some as many as 10. It was catch and release,” fourth grade teacher Carly Kennedy said.
