The Islander asked Capt. John Hocking, the commander of the Avalon Sheriff’s Station, to elaborate on what the numbers might mean.
Capt. Hocking believes the main reason for the continued drop in crime is because the Avalon Sheriff’s Station is working much closer with the community.
Capt. Hocking said, “When members of the community see something suspicious, they call us and report it. We are able to contact the suspicious person before they have time to commit a serious crime.”
“We have seen the same people commit the same crimes over and over. Last year, Avalon Deputies arrested two burglary suspects that committed approximately 5 burglaries each. We were able to apprehend these suspects and they were sentenced to jail. While they were in jail, our burglaries in Avalon completely stopped. Taking the ‘bad guys’ off the streets of Avalon, with the help of the community, is why Avalon is such a safe place to live and visit. Lets keep up the good work by working together. If you see something suspicious, call the Avalon Sheriff’s Station at 310-510-0174 or call 911 if it is an emergency.”
