Lancers open playoffs with blowout win

Last Friday night, the Avalon Lancers football team took to the field healthy, motivated and with something to prove. They were coming off of a long bye week where they had anything but a break and a mentality focused on post season football.

This game was against the Blair Viking for Round 1 of the playoffs and the Lancers came in strong. Pretty much all of Avalon’s roster participated in this game where they would come out on top with a 78-0 victory. This blowout win was Avalon largest all season but that’s not on their mind. Continuing their strong run in the playoffs is what is keeping their focus right now.

The Lancers next opponent is the Mojave Mustangs, with whom Avalon is all too familiar. The last time the Lancers played Mojave was back in the 2015 CIF-SS championship game where Avalon won its first ever title 50-8. That was Michael Forcella’s first season as the head coach of the Lancers and preparation for this game is anything but new.

Forcella stated, “Mojave is a team that I have a ton of respect for and they are a good team but as we have proven so far this season, so are we. We have the best defensive line in 8-man football this season, our offensive backfield with Jose Gomez, Jason Campos and DeAngelo Reyes is the strongest in the eight-man CIF-SS and of course, a phenomenal kicker.”

Avalon will take to the road this Friday to travel up to Mojave. The kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. If the Lancers win this game, they will play home next Friday in the CIF-SS semifinals.
