Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Sept. 12 to Sept. 18, 2018.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
September 12
• An anonymous informant came to the Avalon Sheriff’s Station with a small amount of methamphetamine that they found near Middle Terrace Road and Wrigley Road.
September 13
• Personnel from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Bureau of Investigation, came to the island to meet with their assigned parole and probationers.
Jesus Meison of Avalon was arrested on suspicion of possession of a large knife in violation of his probation.
• Deputies responded to the 100 block of Sumner Avenue regarding two found counterfeit $100 bills.
Both bills were sent to the United States Secret Service.
September 14
• Deputies arrested Cameron Berukoff of Huntington Beach on suspicion of allegedly stealing a golf cart, and being involved in a hit and run traffic collision.
The suspect reportedly rolled the golf cart on its side, pinning him underneath it.
The suspect reportedly ran from the scene. He was arrested a short time later by deputies.
September 15
• Two Harbors Deputies handled a boat collision report when a 29-foot powerboat came loose from its mooring and went ashore.
No one was on the boat and no one was injured.
September 16
• Deputies responded to 105 Sumner Avenue regarding an intoxicated male challenging people to fight. Upon the deputies’ arrival, family members took the disturbing individual home.
September 17
• Deputies are handling an investigation where a resident lost her wallet. She then discovered illegal transactions on her credit card.
Deputies are determining who illegally used the lost credit card.
September 18
• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Catalina Avenue regarding a suspicious suitcase. Deputies took the suitcase for safe keeping.
The owner came to the Sheriff’s Station and picked up his suitcase the next morning.
Safety Note
Watch out for an “unclaimed property scam.” Suspects will call, email, or send a letter in the mail indicating that you have unclaimed property (money, or real estate, etc).
All you have to do is provide your personal information to claim the property. It is a scam. Once they obtain your information, you will be the victim of identity theft.
