The Catalina Co-Ed Softball League wrapped up the second round of play Thursday night, July 11. Straight Up Builders won the first game of the night. Pete’s Snack Bar won the second game of the night and remains undefeated. In the first game Straight Up Builders took on CSC Skate Shop. Straight Up Builders hit three doubles and two singles to bring home four runs. CSC Skate Shop answered back with one run. In the second inning, Straight Up Builders converted a fielder choice and a walk to two runs.
In the bottom half of the inning with a runner on third, Skeelo Rojo robbed Mario Chavez of a base hit and RBI with his stretched out catch at short. Both teams brought home four runs in the third. After holding Straight Up Builders scoreless, thanks in part to Tino Rodriguez’ quick reflexes to snag the hard hit line drive at pitcher to deny Danny Alonzo a base hit, CSC Skate Shop batted around the order and brought home nine runs, three off the home run from Jimmy Felix.
Straight Up Builders regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning, answering back with nine runs of their own. Three RBIs were due to the inside the park homer from Charles Nash. With one out, Jose Tovar tried to stretch his triple into a home run. The relay from right field to third base was then thrown to catcher Susie Budd, who applied the tag for the second out. The game ended without CSC Skate Shop scoring a run. Final score of the game: CSC Skate Shop 14, Straight Up Builders 19.
For CSC Skate Shop, Nick Flores and Jose Tovar were both three for three. Kenton Efhan, Jimmy Felix, Tino Rodriguez, Mario Chavez, Esteban Pedroza, Courtney Kennedy and Mindy Malan all contributed one hit. For Straight Up Builders, Robert Reyes and Mickey Mann were both three for three. Danny Alonzo also collected three hits. Brian Wooten, Charles Nash and Susie Budd all had two hits. With one hit each were Scotty Roflfsen, Dave Clary, Aliana Gonzalez, Maria Reyes and Lindsey Salmeron.
The second game of the night was between Pete’s Snack Bar and Catalina Scuba Luv. Allan Vega opened the game for Pete’s Snack Bar with an inside the park home run. With two runs home, Bart Glass collected three RBIs on his inside the park homer, then later scored. A total of six crossed the plate. For Catalina Scuba Luv, Marco Gallegos hit a triple and later scored. Rigo Pedroza was denied an extra base hit on the acrobatic catch in left center from Ryan Hinkley. Pete’s Snack Bar had two runs home when Edmundo Vega tried to stretch his triple to a home run. Just like in the first game, the relay went from left center to third, then to catch Maribel Rodriguez who put down the tag for the out. Catalina Scuba Luv kept pace with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. In the top of the third, Ryan Hinkleys’ perfect streak of hits came to end with the amazing catch from Marco Gallegos, who ran from short to mid center to make the over the shoulder catch. Two more fly outs followed. Catalina Scuba Luv added one more in the bottom of the inning. Pete’s Snack Bar broke the game open in the fourth. Allan Vega collected three RBIs on his over the fence home run. Chuy Sillas came up a couple of batters later and had two RBIs on his inside the park homer. A total of eight runs came home. In the fifth, Pete’s Snack Bar added four more to their lead, three off the triple from Bart Glass. In the bottom of the fifth with time expired, Catalina Scuba Luv rallied for three runs, but it wasn’t enough. Final score Catalina Scuba Luv 7, Pete’s Snack Bar 20.
For Catalina Scuba Luv, Caitlin Lopez was three for three. Juan Chavoya and Santiago Martinez were two for two. Marco Gallegos also had two hits. Jose Cuevas, Rigo Pedroza and Daniel Guerrero all had one hit. For Pete’s Snack Bar, Allan Vega was four for four with two home runs. Chuy Sillas and Bart Glass had three hits. Ryan Hinkley collected two hits. Josh Flynn, Edmundo Vega and Mary Amoroso all contributed one hit.
