For the Islander
Catalina Museum for Art & History will present Amelia Lockwood: Bells, on view Oct. 17, 2026 through April 4, 2027 in the museum’s Artists’ Plaza Gallery. Lockwood’s first solo museum exhibition brings together four ceramic vessels, bloom 1–4, whose intricate surfaces draw equally from Gothic architecture and natural forms. Created for the museum, the works invite visitors into a space of close looking and reflection.
The vessels flower outward into sculptural structures that suggest sanctuaries. Their decorative patterns emerge from the forms themselves, blurring familiar distinctions between what grows in nature and what people build. The exhibition considers how both kinds of structure can shape a sense of shelter and wonder.
Each of the four works, titled bloom 1 through bloom 4, brings together references from the ancient past and imagined futures. In Lockwood’s hands, stoneware and glaze become a way to explore forms that seem to exist outside a single moment in time.
The installation was made for the museum’s Artists’ Plaza Gallery. Some of the patterns follow a base-eight system that echoes the room’s architecture. Visitors are encouraged to spend time with the details and move among the works at their own pace.
With Bells, the museum spotlights Lockwood at a milestone in her career. Following recent solo exhibitions at Morán Morán in Los Angeles, The Valley in Taos and Various Small Fires in Los Angeles, this is her first solo museum presentation.
“We’re proud to champion artists at exciting moments in their careers and introduce their work to new audiences,” said Sheila Bergman, PhD, Executive Director of Catalina Museum for Art & History. “Amelia’s first solo museum exhibition is a wonderful example. Created for our Artists’ Plaza Gallery, Bells invites visitors to spend time with her remarkable work and discover something new in every detail.”
Bells is curated by Timothy LeBlanc, an independent curator based in Southern California.
