For the Islander
The final league game in the Catalina CoEd Softball League was played this past Thursday. Game one was between Sunset Bar & Grill and Straight Up Builders.
Sunset Bar & Grill was up first and put up three runs off doubles from Julian Tejeda and Rosandra Hernandez, and a two RBI inside-the-park home run from Jose Octavo. In the top of the second inning Uriel Castillo of Straight Up Builders made the highlight reel with his leaping against the fence catch to deny Jack Villagomez of an extra base hit.
Sunset Bar & Grill put two more on the board in the third inning thanks to the two RBI home run from Julian Tejeda. In the top of the fourth inning Briana Morones made a great catch in right field for Straight Up Builders to end the Sunset Bar & Grill threat. In the bottom of the inning Straight Up Builders got on the board with a run.
In the sixth inning Francisco Bravo hit a triple for Sunset Bar & Grill, but was tagged out when he couldn’t return to the base quick enough to beat the throw. Defense ruled the seventh inning, and the game ended with the score Straight Up Builders 1, Sunset Bar & Grill 5.
For Straight Up Builders Dillon Gleber, Sebastian Sanchez, Tyler Engel, Gustavo Gutierrez and Sergio Vallejo collected one hit.
For Sunset Bar & Grill Julain Tejeda, Ryan Adkins and Ben Guzman contributed two hits. Jose Octavo, Rafael Silva, Francisco Bravo and Rosandra Hernandez collected one hit.
Game two between Leave it to Leo Handyman and Buoys & Gulls was for the League Championship. Leave it to Leo Handyman opened the game with four base hits and a double from Leo Aguilar to bring home four.
Buoys & Gulls answered with three runs off four base hits and a sacrifice fly ball. Buoys & Gulls turned a walk into a run in the second inning to tie it up. Caitlin Lopez of Buoys & Gulls made the highlight reel in the fourth inning with her come from nowhere catch in left center to deny Robert Reyes a hit.
In the top of the fifth inning Missy Schafer of Buoys & Gulls made an amazing diving stop to keep Marcos Gallegos of Leave it to Leo Handyman to a single. A walk and a base hit for Leave it to Leo Handyman was followed by a home run from Leo Aguilar. A total of four came home to break the tie.
In the top of the seventh with one out, Nestor Cubillas hit a double for Leave it to Leo Handyman. An error and a double from Marco Gallegos brought home two more. Buoys & Gulls got their last at bat, but another great catch in right field from Santiago Martinez ended the game. Final score Buoys & Gulls 4, Leave it to Leo Handyman 10. Congratulations Leave it to Leo Handyman for winning the League.
For Buoys & Gulls Juan De La Cruz and Weston Leonhardi collected two hits. Chuy Sillas, Joey Yakubec, Eliu Saul, Cailtin Lopez and Missy Schafer all had one hit.
For Leave it to Leo Handyman Marco Gallegos was three for three. Nestor Cubillas and Leo Aguilar had two hits. Robert Reyes, Luis Lazaro, Johnny Hernandez, Renton Minuto, Santiago Martinez and Chela Hernandez all contributed one hit.
