The flowers are beginning to bloom and the days are starting to warm up, all of which indicates that Spring is on the horizon and here comes the 2026 golf season with it. The Catalina Island Golf Course, under the leadership of owner Steve Hoeffs and his wonderful crew of workers, is whipping the course into shape just in time.

The 2026 Boys High School Golf Team consists of 8 players, 2 managers, and 3 volunteer helpers. Local pros Gabe Hernandez and Fidel Rodriguez and former high school standout Danny Pedroza have all contributed their expertise, while retired fireman Buddy Minuto has provided much appreciated supervision, which has been especially beneficial for our younger players.

Our squad is made up of 3 Juniors, Eduardo Zavala, Kobe Hernandez, and Andrew Cruz, 2 Sophomores, Cristian Montalban and David Gonzalez, and 3 Freshmen, Miguel Murillo, Jonathan Mulgado, and Franco Rangel. Zavala, Montalban, and Gonzalez are our most experienced and skilled golfers, while Mulgado is our best newcomer and rising to the top of the leaderboard rather quickly.

Eighth Graders Aden Pacheco and Emiliano Sillas have volunteered to be our managers and are helping keep and record the players’ scores.

The Lancer linksters have come up short in their first 3 matches of the season, all at home one against San Juan Hills, on Feb. 26 and then against Webb on March 2, and finally against Capistrano Valley Christian on Friday, March 6.

San Juan Hills was a non-league match and Avalon shot a team score of 209 and San Juan Hills had a nice 171. Against Webb the Lancers turned in a team score of 224 to Webb’s 196. In our third match of the season the Lancers faced Capistrano Valley Christian and lost in a really close match 209 to 212.

Our next 2 matches were on the mainland, first against Cabrillo at Skylinks, on Monday March 9, and then against Fairmont Prep and Western Christian in a tri match at Mountain Meadows, on Tuesday, March 10. Good luck and continue on the path of improvement.
