The Avalon High Yearbook and Photography students recently received a gift of five Nikon D3500 cameras, five lenses, bags, and extra chargers, SD cards, and batteries. The purchase was mainly funded by a generous donor, who wishes to stay anonymous at this time, according to organizers of the purchase.

Nick Morrow, who has shot photos for school sports and other activities, offered his expertise in choosing the cameras. Morrow is also now assisting in finding ways to help raise more funds, as the school has a goal of 15 cameras for students working on Yearbook and in photography classes.

“I researched a good camera kit that would be both uniform and very usable for the kids,” Morrow said. “That way we minimize the confusion of different camera makes/models and this helps learning the basics much easier.”

Working with Avalon School Activities Director Melinda Clare and with some other former yearbook students and photographers, Morrow said they have already been able to raise funds for three more kits that are on the way. They are getting refurbished cameras through Amazon that are in like-new condition, but much more reasonably priced.

Morrow also said that several photographers on the island have offered to help teach the students some basic of photography, such as portraits, headshots, sports and event photography. They are also looking for ways to exhibit the students’ work in the near future.
