The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of Sept. 5 to Sept. 11, 2024. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
September 5
- Deputies were contacted at the station by a concerned citizen who stated a woman walking down the street was beating her child. The deputies located the mother and son and determined there had been no crime committed. The woman said she disciplined her son for trying to run into the street. The deputies confirmed a parent can still discipline their children.
September 6
- Deputies responded to a restaurant on Crescent Avenue for a business disturbance. The caller stated 4 females and 2 males ordered drinks, left them on the table, walked out of the establishment and did not pay for them. The deputies located the day drinkers who stated they only left because the server would not accept their identifications from a cellphone picture. The deputies advised them they could not use a picture as ID and the employees were only following the law. One of the men in the group returned to the restaurant and settled the tab.
September 7
- Deputies responded to the 300 block of Tremont Street for a family disturbance. The caller stated his wife began arguing with him and slapped him on his cheek. The deputies located the woman and arrested Juana Rodriguez, 58, of Avalon, on suspicion of spousal assault.
September 9
- Deputies were contacted by a man who stated an unknown pirate had stolen $500 from his boat. The man did not know who the thief was and requested extra patrol near his mooring.
- Deputies responded to a disturbance on Marilla Avenue. The caller stated a man and woman were arguing inside one of the hotel rooms. The deputies contacted the couple who confirmed they were in fact arguing but never got physical with each other. A brief counseling session was held and the deputies left the room.
September 10
- Deputies responded to a family disturbance on Sumner Avenue. The caller stated her son was punched by a man at the residence. The deputies contacted all parties, and they were non-desirous of prosecution or arrest.
