Mayor Anni Marshall will be challenged by mayoral candidates Cinde Cassidy, a current council member and Ralph Morrow, a former councilman who was voted out of office in 2014.
Marshall was elected to office with 75 percent of the vote for the mayor’s race. In recent weeks, Cassidy and Marshall have voted on opposite sides of issues, included the decision to fire City Manager Ben Harvey. Marshall was part of the group that voted in favor of his termination.
Morrow was elected mayor of Avalon four times in the past.
Council members Oley Olsen and Richard Hernandez are running for re-election. Challenging them are former council member Michael Ponce, former fire chief and former part time city manager Steven Hoefs, Planning Commissioner Bruce Fertig, Planning Commissioner Yolanda Montano, and residents Sandra Putnum and Cynthia Morris.
Ponce, like Morrow, was voted out of office two years ago, with Ponce receiving 29 percent of the vote and Morrow receiving 28 percent of the vote. Hoefs retired from the fire service in June 2014.
