Grand Theft Auto

and Joyriding

The taking of a golf cart with the intent to permanently deprive the owner of the vehicle is a felony known as “Grand Theft Auto.”

The taking of a vehicle without the owner’s permission (with no intent to permanently deprive) is also a felony, but known as “Joyriding.”

Grand Theft Auto is slightly more serious than Joyriding in terms of length of incarceration, but both crimes can lead to incarceration in county jail or state prison.

The Sheriff’s Department will work closely with the District Attorney’s Office to prosecute these offenders to not only protect the rights of the victims, but to protect potential future victims as well.

If you are a parent, a relative or just a law-abiding friend, please remind anyone who may become involved in these crimes of the serious consequences to stealing a golf cart even if their intent is just to take the victim’s cart for a short ride.
