Pete’s Cafe wins Co-Ed Softball tournament

In the final game of the Catalina Co-Ed Softball season, Catalina Scuba Luv faced off against Pete’s Snack Bar for the title of Tournament Champion.

In the final game of the Catalina Co-Ed Softball season, Catalina Scuba Luv faced off against Pete’s Snack Bar for the title of Tournament Champion.

Catalina Scuba Luv was up first, and scored two runs off the bat of Bob Kennedy’s inside the park home run. Pete’s Cafe answered back with three runs. Defense ruled the next two innings. Allan Vega made an amazing double play in the third that involved jumping over the runner to make the throw to first. In the top of the fourth, Catalina Scuba Luv tied up the game when Santiago Martinez hit an inside the park homer.

Pete’s Cafe regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning scoring four runs. Both teams had a run come home in the fifth. Catalina Scuba Luv kept it close with two more runs in the sixth. Pete’s Cafe extended their lead with another four runs in the bottom of the inning. Allan Vega started the rally with his home run. Down by six, Catalina Scuba Luv came up to bat for the last time. Jose Cuevas collected three RBIs on his inside the park homer.

After an intentional walk to Marco Gallegos, Maribel Rodriguez stepped up to the plate and promptly hit a base hit to bring home two runs. Maribel scored the tying run when Rigo Pedroza hit a triple. Rigo was left stranded at third. Pete’s Cafe got their last at bat. With one out, Mirta Mora hit a single. With two outs, two walks followed, then Chuy Sillas hit a base hit to bring Mirta home and win the game. Final score Catalina Scuba Luv 12, Pete’s Cafe 13.

For Catalina Scuba Luv, Jose Cuevas was three for three. Bob Kennedy also had three hits. Rigo Pedroza collected two hits. Santiago Martinez, Daniel Guerrero, Lupe Sanchez and Maribel Rodriguez all had one hit. For Pete’s Cafe, Chuy Sillas was five for five. Allan Vega, Josh Flynn, Alfredo Cisneros and Mirta Mora all contributed two hits. With one hit each were Bart Glass and Sandy Gutierrez.

The Catalina Co-Ed League representative said they thank their sponsors Catalina Scuba Luv, Catalina Skate Shop, Pete’s Cafe and Straight Up Builders and that their generosity is greatly appreciated.
