The varsity quarterback who suffered a brain injury during the Avalon High School game is now out of the intensive care unit, according to a Sunday, Oct. 7, blog posted by friends of the family.
Dax Ryan McGregor, 17, of Wildomar Cornerstone Christian School, was apparently injured during the homecoming football game here in Avalon, on Sunday, Sept. 21. McGregor was tackled three or four times during the game, according to Jennifer Leonhardi, office manager of the Catalina Islander.

"Ryan has been moved out of the ICU into a less monitored room," wrote Sheri Zastoke and Tracy Saunders on their blog at giveforward.com. "He is speaking a bit and and he is very, very tired. The plan is to move him to a specialized rehabilitation center. He is not able to move around yet. Shannon and his father remain with him and his brothers were able to visit him for the first time. He has a very long road to go. No one is sure yet what challenges are ahead."
As reported in the Friday, Oct. 5, print edition of the Catalina Islander, McGregor was taken off artificial life support on Sunday, Sept. 30, and has been breathing on his own ever since.
His mother Shannon McGregor, last reported on his condition on Wednesday, Oct. 3, when he was still in the ICU. Zastoke and Saunders quoted her as saying: "I'm sitting here next to Ryan while he is comfortably sleeping. I'm so lucky that he is still here and improving every day ( for the past three days).It's been 12 days in ICU and being here in the hospital is like watching a crazy reality show open 24/7, and unfortunately since we've been here, we've seen quite a few families lose their loved ones. It constantly reminds me how that totally couldve been us. it breaks my heart. Ryan is just so very lucky to be alive."
The Fall Festival will reportedly include a booth to raise money for the McGregor family, 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, on Crescent Avenue.
The website giveforward.com is also raising money for the McGregors. As of Suday afternoon, Oct. 7, the website had raised $18,542 of its $25,000 goal. It is not known how much of that money came from Avalon. According to the website, $150 in donations came from two different individuals who each identified themselves as an “Avalon parent.”
The online fundraising drive will end on Nov. 23.
