Dogathon and Dr. Denney draws crowd

The much-anticipated Dogathon and Dr. Denney appreciation day presented by the Catalina Humane Society was held on Sunday, Sept. 1 and drew a crowd of well-wishers and participants.

“We are a small group,” said Humane Society President Dianne Stone, “so it was great to see all of the people with dogs come out for the Dr. Denney Appreciation Parade down Front Street.”

About 50 owners and their dogs as well as “Pope” Don Frankforther and various supporters with invisible dogs on leashes marched to Wrigley Stage. Dr. Richard and Mrs. Anney Denney rode as Grand Marshals and brought their own dogs to enjoy the fun as well.

Former Avalon City Councilman Tim Winslow read the city proclamation commending the work done by local veterinarian Dr. Richard Denney. McGruff the Crime Dog and Los Angeles County Sheriff K-9 officer Steve Wilkinson and his dog “Tina” also participated in the parade and festivities that followed.

At Joe Machado Field, six extremely talented Border Collie disc dogs (from the mainland group Disc Dogs of Southern California) and their handlers put on high-spirited frisbee and acrobatic show.

Trudy Robinson and her dog were “Best In Show.” Robinson raised $210 in donations for the Humane Society. Reserve Champion in fundraising was Judy Hibbs and her dog Kit.

A beagle named Ellie and her owner Kathy Patterson were Third and Ellie was crowned “Miss Congeniality.” Judges awarded First, Second and Third Place ribbons in the dog show, while guests enjoyed food, music, pet portraits and a great “dog day afternoon.” on the lawn.
