“Something else we do that is different is that we offer bill payment at our site,” Bovay said.  “People can come and pay their phone bill or credit card bill and we have relationships with Edison, Verizon as well as pre-paid phone time so that people can pay those bills in cash and don’t have to write checks.”

Eco Marathon sets new record

The patter of about 300 pairs of running shoes hit the ground on Saturday morning, Nov. 10, in Avalon as the Catalina Eco Marathon started and continued into the Island’s panaramic natural landscapes. According to Eco Marathon spokesperson Meghan Leon, the 2012 race drew a record number of entries, which means more visitors to Catalina during the slower time of year, thereby giving a bit of a boost to the local tourist economy.

The running event started and finished in Avalon.

The entrants ran 26.2 miles through some of the most breath-taking scenery offered by any run.

County to close Island courthouse

Los Angeles County Court officials announced in mid-November that due to budgetary shortfalls of up to $85 million, they would close 10 LA County community courthouses, including Avalon’s Courthouse on Sumner.

These closures are reported to be completed by June 30 of 2013. The Avalon courthouse has existed for 50 years.  Anyone required to appear in court, whether it is a defendant (and/or their parents in some juvenile cases), a witness who has been subpoenaed to appear to testify regarding the case, the arresting officer, or family and friends who are there for moral support, all parties will soon have to travel to the mainland for court proceedings.

Many courts begin at 8 a.m.

Meanwhile, there are no boats that leave the Island early enough to arrive on the mainland and get Avalon residents into their required courtroom by that time.

Lancers winning season

The 2012 Avalon Lancers Football team will go down in the annals of Catalina as one of the best. With an end of the season record of 10 wins and one loss in their last game, the team and its coaches have a lot to be proud of. Perhaps no one is more proud than head coach Earl Schrader, who explained that they are high on the list of the great Lancer teams that he has coached over the years.

“We’ve had a couple of other teams in the past that went 11 and 1,” Schrader said. “but this year’s team was very good.”The reason? Experience.

Schrader explained that this year’s Lancers Football team had a high number of seniors on the team. Schrader is already looking ahead to next year’s season.
