Fall is upon us, winter is coming and basketball is on the rise.

The 2017-2018 Avalon Boys Basketball season is ready to go.

The Lancers have been practicing hard on the outside courts as they have patiently waited for the finishing of the new gym floor.  This year’s team is young and full of potential.  The lone senior is Javier Peguero who will lead the team at the perimeter position.  He can shoot, he can drive and he can defend.

The Margaret G. Hall Scholarship Golf Tournament raised over $2,000 again to help keep the funds going for this wonderful award.

The tournament is in memory of Margaret Hall, a former resident whose family of 15—13 kids and mom and dad—grew up on Catalina Island during the summer months. Margaret worked at the school for many years as a playground attendant and volunteered as a chaperone for many basketball road trips.

The Avalon Boys Varsity Basketball team gave a valiant effort, but unfortunately came up short in a wild and crazy championship game of the 25th Annual Catalina Classic.

The Lancers started the tournament against Vaughn High School on Thursday, Dec. 17 and Avalon came out nervous and cold in their first home game and fell behind 16-4 in the first quarter.

The Avalon Boys Varsity Basketball Team traveled to Fullerton, CA, on Saturday, Feb. 1 to face the Eastside Christian Eagles.

Both teams have struggled with the vastly improved competition in the San Joaquin League this year and so these games had special significance.

For the third consecutive year the Avalon Boys Golf team finished at the top of the San Joaquin Valley League Individual Tournament and will march into the CIF Regional Playoffs once again.

Avalon finished the season undefeated in both league and non-league competition and then proceeded to dominate the league individual tournament.

The Avalon High School Boys Golf Team is once again at the top of the San Joaquin Valley League and looks like a good bet to win their third consecutive league title.

The Lancers are led by seniors Gabe Hernandez, Ricardo Tamayo, Bryan Jimenez, and Juan Pablo Bravo. Juniors Anthony Hernandez Perez and Luis Herrera have contributed as well along with newcomers, freshman Anthony Hernandez and Chase Atchison.

The Avalon Boys Varsity Basketball Team traveled to the mainland on Friday, Jan. 11, to play Capistrano Valley Christian.   The Lancers started slow and fell behind 11-4 in the first quarter.  However in the second quarter they settled down on offense and began to score points and get steals off of a stifling full court press.

Avalon boys basketball team attempt to capture third straight win falls short

By Steve Hall

The Avalon Boys Varsity basketball team came up short in their attempt at a “three peat” in the Annual Catalina Classic. In the end, they came in second place.

The Lancers came out strong in game one against longtime rival Wildwood and came away with a 74-65 victory behind the outstanding play of Gabe Hernandez and Edgar Alvarez.

Although their goal was to win the tournament the Avalon Boys Basketball team came away with the second place trophy in their annual trip to Huntington Beach to play in the Liberty Christian Beach Bash Tournament.

Avalon looked real strong in the first three games of the tournament behind the outstanding play of senior Edgar Alvarez and sophomore Danny Jimenez.
