Sources say that the contract for John Friel, chief executive officer of the local hospital, has not been renewed.
The news broke unexpectedly last week. In related news, three board members have apparently resigned.
An interim CEO was on the job Friday, May 1.
The news of Friel’s departure surprized many Islanders, including Dr. Rod Muller, immediate past president of the board. Muller resigned on March 31.

Margarita Diaz and John Henry Jackson have a lot of special dates to mark their courtship. Both moved to Catalina Island in 2012.

They met at the Post Office (duh!) in August of 2012. Diaz says, “of course he was picking up a package and he grabbed my hand.”

The pair’s first kiss was on New Year’s Eve 2012 at the stroke of midnight at JL’s (Dec. 31, 2012)

Jackson professed his love for Diaz on May 25, 2014, biking the East End trail. She told him “I love you” as well on that day.

Ann Muscat, PhD, the president and CEO of the Catalina Island Conservancy, announced this week that she would retire at the end of 2016.

The announcement will provide time for the nonprofit organization to find her replacement and for her successor to get oriented to the new position.

Muscat will work with the Conservancy’s Board of Directors as it launches its search for a new president and CEO.

Catalina Tours and, Catalina Island’s No. 1 activities booking website, recently announces its 2014 Tour of the Year Awards.  

This award recognizes the quality of the winner’s tour along with excellent customer service and quality management.  

Tour companies for this award are selected from our 27 different on line tours. One tour from the activities that operate on land and one activity from the ocean tours are selected each year.

Land tour of the Year

Michelle Rufino, one of the captains of Varsity Cheer Squad at Avalon High School was given the chance of a lifetime last weekend, when she took the stage to perform at USA Nationals.

USA stands for the United Spirit Association and is one of the top professional cheerleading companies in the world.

When the Varsity Cheer team attended their summer training camp in 2014, Michelle was asked to join their All-American cheerleading team, an elite opportunity offered to a select number of individuals throughout the nation.

A public memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, for Avalon Harbor Patrol Officer Timothy Douglas Mitchell at Casino Dive Park.


At noon, the Catalina Express “Cat X” and all other vessels will depart Float 5 and proceed to Little Farnsworth (just offshore from the Southern California Edison plant) for a scattering of the ashes.  The family will be aboard Rescue 2 and all other boats will shadow Rescue 2 while the ashes are released.

Kids at Play has nurtured hundreds of children with creativity.  Helping them boost their self-confidence and self-esteem.  KAP gives the students the chance to explore their imagination and find their individuality.  

Kids At Play creates brave students whom become Kids at Play, is ready to begin a new 10 week session, which will culminate to a live performance in November.  Kids at Play, Children’s Theater Company is about to enter its 22nd year of creativity.  

The staff of the Catalina Islander caught up with Avalon High School’s Class of 2014 valedictorian Natalie Vega this week.

She is a native of the Island and her father, Conrado Vega is well-known around Avalon as the manager of Lloyd’s of Avalon and Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals. He mom’s name is Rosa. Natalie  will be the first Avalon High School graduate to attend Harvard University. She made time in her busy schedule to give answers to the following questions.
