On Tues, Nov. 21 the city of Avalon hosted the 3rd Artesian Market of the year.  The Artesian Market is an opportunity for local Artisans and businesses to showcase their wares on Front Street. The Artesian Market was created to celebrate local craftsmen and promote a festive atmosphere in the center of Avalon.  

 

The city of Avalon’s Community Service Department along with the Catalina Arts Association brought together local artist and vendors to create the first Artisan Market on Tuesday.

Fifteen vendors along Crescent Avenue provided everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, to customize printing, roasted coffee beans, custom jewelry, homemade jams, interactive art and many more.  

Being surrounded by water and home to the Tuna Club, which is the home to the modern day sports fishing, the City of Avalon’s Community Service Deparment created the first Avalon Youth Fishing Club.

 The AYFC is a four-week program that teaches youth the sport of fishing as well as the respect for the water and the wildlife that we take from.

The U.S. Championship Catalina Channel Crossing is the pinnacle race of the Southern California Outrigger Association, where paddlers from all over California to Tahiti come to race.  It has been over 15 years since Avalon has had a representative in the race.  With the backing of the City of Avalon’s Community Service Department the Catalina Island Outrigger Canoe Club was reborn.

Pablo Secundino Murillo born March 28th, 1965 in Mexico City and passed away July 18th, 2017 in his family’s home, where he was born. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday Sep. 3rd on the island.

Going into the last two games against Vivian Webb High School the Avalon Lady Lancers knew what was at stake.  Either win these last two games of the season or stay home for the playoffs.

The City of Avalon has announced that this year’s 4th of July Parade theme is “From Sea to Shining Sea: Celebrating Catalina Island’s Maritime History.” Honoring his years of service to our Island, the community of Avalon is honoring Doug Bombard (pictured on the left) as Grand Marshal this year at the Independence Day Parade. The 4th of July Parade will be held on Monday, July 4.

The parade will line up at 12:30 p.m. at the Casino Building and will proceed down Crescent Avenue beginning at 1 p.m.  

The Catalina Island Classic Downhill Skate Race returned to the Island on Friday May 6-8th.  Under the new restructuring of ownership of Highline Productions, the Classic was held for the 5th year in a row.

The race starts on top of Wrigley Road next to the Inn at Mt. Ada and twist and turns to the finish at entrance road to Wrigley Road Terrace.  

Sixty-four professional skaters came soaring down at high speeds in full leather, helmets, and a total lack of fear.  

In the spirit of National Volunteer week, the City of Avalon honored eight community members, past and present, who have given unselfishly to our youth of Avalon.

Either by their time given, organizing, or philanthropically supporting youth programs.

The Lady Lancers basketball team took 3rd place in the three day tournament The Avalon Basketball Classic.  The tournament was held Dec. 28-30 with six teams participating in a pool play system.  AGBU, Archer, Avalon, Bishop Diego, Hesperia and Vaughn.
