Our City, like others in the USA and around the world, is facing some real challenges ahead. Now, more than ever, Avalon desperately needs Council Members that will lead for the betterment of Avalon, rather than what is popular.  I have been and will be that leader.

Past service:  Avalon City Council (1982-86), Planning Commission (1986-90), member of the Avalon Hospital Board of Directors and Chairman for 5 years, member of the Avalon Chamber of Commerce Board and Chairman twice, Corporate employee for over 40 years and previous  sole owner of two businesses in Avalon.  During my employment I served as SCICo Group Vice President for Visitor Operations and President of Two Harbors Enterprises and managed over 200 hundred employees and budgets of over 10 million dollars.  I have proudly served as the "water boy" for the Avalon High School Football team for the past 14 years.

I am extremely proud of being a member of the Avalon City Council for the past four years. Some of my accomplishments:

• Opened Pebbly Beach Road for all traffic including walkers and bikes

• Directed the Finance Department to complete the Annual Audits – annually not occasionally.

• Obtained the seed money for artificial turf for Joe Machado Field to make it usable year round by all of our different sports teams and events

• Implemented the testing of noisy golf carts.

• Approved a new Vons

• Finished the major sewer reconstruction and started the Sewer Lateral inspection program.

• Assisted in getting Avalon off Heal the Bay’s Beach Bummer list!!!

• Avalon’s budget for the past two years has been balanced and we are starting to increase our reserves for capital projects and those rainy days.

• Started the fuel dock before losing grant funds.

• Worked with SCE/ Avalon to get an additional desalination unit to hold off Stage 3 Rationing. This was critical in preventing loss of Avalon jobs.

• Finished the salary and position survey for City employees and ratified the new agreements with the employees.

Our City continues to face challenges and opportunities:

• Ageing infrastructure

• Island wide water shortages

• Traffic and lack of parking

• Limited funds

• We need to continue looking into reclaimed water to replace our very old salt water system

• Continue to look for recreational options for our youth

• Keep Avalon as pristine as possible for our Residents and Visitors

The City needs to be a integral member of the Island Community if any projects that require land can be completed. I have the time, the expertise and the experience to help our City find these solutions.

I have been happily married to Kate for over 37 years, and have raised two children in Avalon, Holly Eroen and Tommy Olsen and four grandchildren and have been an Avalon home owner for over 35 years.

Please Vote for Oley Olsen .  STILL the smart choice.
