The first weekend of the month Avalon served as the finish on the 8th and start on the 9th of the “There and Back Regatta” sponsored by Shoreline Yacht Club of Long Beach.

Valentine’s Day fell on a Friday and marked the beginning of the 3-day President’s Day weekend. Temperatures were forecast to be high and seas calm so we prepared for a busy weekend.  Warm air and cool ocean temps produced heavy fog on Friday creating challenging conditions for the 64 boats arriving.  They were rewarded though at 2:30 in the afternoon when the fog lifted leaving us with a beautiful sunny day.

We had some high clouds with sun and warm temps on Saturday the 15th and welcomed another 72 boats.

Weather, underwater visibility and attendance were good this year for the 33rd Annual Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup held on Saturday, Feb. 22 with 480 divers participating.  All kinds of debris was collected – toilets, valuable old coins, bottles of rum, fishing poles – 3270 pounds total.

The predicted storms finally brought rain that began to fall on the evening of the 26th.  By the 28th the wind and seas in the channel were unfavorable and all cross channel carrier runs were cancelled.  During one squall wind speeds were measured at 43mph in the harbor.

An Avalon Harbor resident took some awesome pictures of a humpback whale breaching ¾ mile off Abalone Point on the 27th.  To see these great photos and to keep up with all the happenings in and around harbor, like us on Face book: Avalon Harbor Patrol.
